Are there scholarships available for students with chronic illnesses?

I'm a junior in high school who has been managing a chronic illness for a few years now. I've heard there might be specific scholarships available for students like me who have chronic illnesses, but I don't know where to start looking. Are there any well-known scholarships that cater to this need, or any organizations that focus on helping students with chronic illness funds? I want to make sure I'm exploring all the financial aid options that might help make college more affordable. If anyone has experience with this or knows of particular scholarships, tips would be greatly appreciated!

Absolutely, there are indeed scholarships out there designed specifically to aid students managing chronic illnesses. These scholarships aim to ease the financial burden of college for students who not only have to manage their course work but also an ongoing health condition.

One such scholarship is the Students with Hemophilia Scholarship program from Medexus Pharma. Although specific, it is meant for students diagnosed with hemophilia and awards multiple scholarships a year. The AbbVie Immunology Scholarship is another one which supports students with certain inflammatory diseases.

For students with cystic fibrosis, the Boomer Esiason Foundation Scholarship Program offers numerous scholarships. Similarly, the Diabetes Hope Foundation Scholarship offers a number of scholarships for students living with type 1 diabetes.

These are just few specific examples, but you should certainly conduct further research to find scholarships that are appropriate for your specific chronic illness. Look at disease-specific foundations or organizations, as they often have scholarship programs to support students affected by the illness.

Another avenue to consider is checking out scholarship search platforms, like Appily, Fastweb or Scholarships.com, where you can personalize your scholarship searches based on your specific circumstances, including chronic illnesses.

Also, I would encourage you to reach out to your school's guidance counselor or financial aid office. They can be instrumental in helping you locate scholarships tailored to your situation and can provide guidance on application strategies.

Keep in mind to prepare well for the application process - having compelling personal essays and strong letters of recommendation can make an extensive difference. It might be a challenging task, but well worth it when it comes to reducing your college costs. There's quite a bit out there if you take the time to dig and explore!
