What is the application process like for the US Presidential Scholars Program?

I've heard a lot about the US Presidential Scholars Program and it sounds like a really prestigious opportunity. I'm curious about what the application process involves. Do you have to apply directly, or is there some sort of nomination process? Also, what are the chances of being selected, and are there any tips for standing out as a candidate? I'm trying to figure out if this is something I should realistically pursue or if it's too competitive.

The U.S. Presidential Scholars Program is indeed a prestigious program that recognizes and honors some of our nation's most distinguished high school seniors. It's competitive, but if you're a high-achieving student, it's worth considering.

The selection process happens in two stages:

1. Identification of the candidates: Candidates are identified based on their performance on the SAT or ACT (about 4,000 candidates each year), or through other recognition processes like nominations from the Chief State School Officers (CSSOs), the National YoungArts Foundation, Career and Technical Education, or Community College Scholars program.

2. Application process: Once identified as a candidate, you would receive an invitation to apply to the program. This application includes essays, self-assessments, secondary school reports, and transcripts. It's important to know that this part of the process is not automatic; you have to complete and submit the application by a specific deadline to be considered for the program.

As for standing out, the selection process is holistic and looks at a variety of factors beyond academic record. It values leadership, community service, involvement in a variety of extracurricular and co-curricular activities, and strong writing skills. Demonstrating a dedication to service, a passion for your interests, and a well-rounded character in your application would be valuable here.

For context on the competitiveness, from about 4,000 candidates identified each year, around 650 semi-finalists are selected, and then the final 161 scholars are chosen.

Consideration for the program is a commendable goal, but remember: it's just one of many ways to demonstrate your achievements and commitment to your future learning. Your main focus should be on maintaining a strong academic and extracurricular profile that aligns with your personal and educational goals.
