What are Financial Aid Awards and How Do They Work?

As a junior in high school, I've heard a lot about financial aid awards but I'm still a bit confused about what exactly they include. Could someone explain what these awards entail? I'm particularly interested in how they are calculated and what types of aid might be offered. Also, when should I expect to receive information about my potential financial aid awards if I'm planning to apply for colleges soon? Any advice or personal experiences would be super helpful!

Financial aid awards are packages offered by colleges to help students afford the cost of attendance. They can consist of several types of aid, including grants, scholarships, work-study programs, and loans.

Let's go through each:

1. Grants and scholarships: This is essentially free money awarded to you based on either financial need (grants) or achievement (scholarships). Need-based grants are primarily determined by your family's financial situation, which they obtain through your completion of the FAFSA or the CSS Profile. Scholarships, on the other hand, could be based on academic achievements, athletics, or a unique talent or characteristic.

2. Work-study: This federal program provides part-time jobs for students with financial need, allowing them to earn money to pay for education expenses.

3. Loans: These are borrowed funds that must be paid back, with interest, after you finish school or drop below half-time enrollment. Some loans are need-based and some are not, with various interest rates and repayment schedules.

How they are awarded and how much you receive depends on several factors, including your Expected Family Contribution (EFC) or Student Aid Index (SAI, the term used starting from the 2023-2024 FAFSA application), the cost of attendance at your school, your year in school, your enrollment status, and the amount of funding available at your school.

Remember that each school may offer a different financial aid package, even if the need-based elements of the package are roughly the same.

As for timelines, you submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and if applicable, the CSS Profile, starting October 1 the year before you plan to attend college. Each school has its own financial aid deadlines, so you’ll want to check those. You typically receive your financial aid award letter in the spring—sometimes as early as February or as late as April, and it often comes with your acceptance letter.

Important to note that in cases of Early Decision, you should use the college's net price calculator to get a rough estimate of the aid you may receive before application, since you would be committing to the school before knowing your aid package.

Remember to critically analyze each component of your financial aid package, noting which parts need to be paid back and which do not. It's crucial to fully understand what you're accepting when you confirm a financial aid award.
