Any tips on finding scholarships for animation students?

I'm a junior in high school and I've been really interested in animation for a while now. I'm aiming to major in animation or a related field in college, but I'm definitely concerned about the costs. I'm hoping to find scholarships that would support an aspiring animator like me.

Does anyone have suggestions on scholarships specifically for students interested in animation? Are there particular schools or companies that tend to offer these kinds of scholarships? Also, if you have any advice on building a portfolio for these applications, that would be awesome!

When looking for scholarships for animation students, you may find it beneficial to first begin your research with professional organizations, or companies involved with animation. Organizations related to the animation industry such as The Animation Guild or Women in Animation often offer scholarships to students interested in breaking into the field. For example, the Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences Foundation offers scholarships to students pursuing careers in interactive entertainment, which could include animation.

Similarly, companies that produce animated content, like Pixar or DreamWorks, might support aspiring animators as part of their outreach or diversity efforts — for instance, Pixar offers an annual RenderMan Student Rendering Competition where students can submit their renderings for a chance to win scholarships.

Many colleges and universities also offer subject-specific scholarships. If there are certain schools you're looking at, reach out to the financial aid office or whoever is in charge of the animation program about any scholarships available to majors.

Your portfolio is a huge part of your application, especially in the arts. It's your chance to showcase your skills and vision as an animator. Here are a few tips:

- Variety: Your portfolio should showcase your range and versatility. You can include different types of animation such as stop motion, 2D, 3D, character design, sketches, or storyboards.

- Quality over quantity: Focus on displaying your best work, rather than filling it with a lot of subpar work. It's usually suggested that you begin and end your portfolio with your strongest pieces.

- Personal style: While it's important to demonstrate your ability to work in a range of techniques and styles, don't forget to show your unique creativity. This is what will make you stand out from other applicants.

- Feedback: Solicit feedback from your teachers, or professional animators if possible, before finalizing your portfolio. This input can be incredibly valuable.

- Document well: Present your work in a professional manner. If the application requires physical copies, make sure you take high-quality photos. If it's digital, make sure to use high-resolution images and keep the overall design clean.

Good luck in your scholarship search and future studies!
