What opportunities are there for environmental studies scholarships?

I'm really passionate about environmental science and considering majoring in environmental studies when I go to college. I'm trying to figure out how to fund my education, so I'm on the lookout for scholarships specifically aimed at students interested in environmental fields.

Does anyone know of any scholarships that are tailor-made for future environmentalists? And what kind of requirements or qualifications do they typically ask for? I'm looking for national opportunities, but also wouldn't mind some info on smaller, possibly local options. Thanks in advance!

There are quite a handful of scholarships available to environmental studies students. Some are specific to environmental studies, while others are open to different majors but would certainly welcome environmental studies students. Here are a few you might be interested in:

1. Brower Youth Awards: This program recognizes outstanding young environmental leaders with a $3,000 cash prize and a week-long, all-expenses-paid trip to San Francisco for the awards ceremony and various speaking engagements.

2. Udall Undergraduate Scholarship: Awarding up to $7,000 to sophomores and juniors demonstrating leadership, public service, and commitment to environmental or Native American tribal policy, or healthcare.

3. American Water Works Association Scholarships: Several scholarships available for undergraduates and graduates who are studying primarily water supply and treatment or environmental issues related to these.

4. Eckenfelder Scholarship: Brown and Caldwell award this $5,000 scholarship to applicants interested in pursuing a career in the environmental profession.

5. Stockholm Junior Water Prize: High school students (grades 9-12) conducting water-related research are eligible for this recognition.

6. Garden Club of America Scholarships: They offer several different scholarships, many for students who are studying environmental science or closely related fields.

The qualifications typically include having a demonstrated interest in environmental studies/sciences or related fields, a strong academic performance (GPA requirements vary, but typically 3.0 or higher is desired), and often some evidence of leadership or community-service activities related to environmental causes.

Furthermore, I would also suggest reaching out to local environmental NGOs, clubs, or societies in your area who may be aware of smaller scholarships on a local level. Oftentimes, the competition for these scholarships is less intense, which might increase your chances of success. Good luck with your scholarship search!
