Seeking Scholarships for Black Women in 2024

I'm starting to look into various scholarships as I plan my college journey for 2024. As a black woman, I'm particularly interested in finding scholarships that cater to minorities like me. Are there any specific programs or organizations offering scholarships for black women in the upcoming year?

It would be great to hear from anyone who has applied for these scholarships before or knows where to find a list of them. I'm looking for any advice on how to strengthen my application and make sure I meet the criteria set by these programs.

Thanks for any help you can offer!

Certainly, there are indeed scholarships specifically for black female students to help defray the cost of their university education. Here are a couple to consider:

1. The United Negro College Fund (UNCF) offers a wide range of scholarships for black students, some of which are for black women specifically. The UNCF has numerous scholarships with their own unique criteria for eligibility. A good starting point would be to use their scholarship filter on their website which can help you find scholarships you're eligible for.

2. The National Association of Negro Business and Professional Women’s Clubs (NANBPWC) provides scholarships for African American women. I would suggest exploring their National Scholarship program which is intended to provide financial assistance to African American women at any stage of their post-secondary education.

3. The Black Women in Sisterhood for Action (BISA) Scholarship program is available to graduating high-school seniors who have been accepted into a two or four-year college or university. BISA dedicates most of its funds towards the provision of scholarships for black women.

4. Another scholarship you may consider is Dr. Julianne Malveaux Scholarship, which is for African-American women college sophomores or juniors enrolled in a college or university majoring in journalism, economics, or a related field.

5. Lastly, The National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) offers scholarships to African American women pursuing a major in journalism, communications, or a related field.

You asked about how to strengthen your application, and a few common themes emerge from successful scholarship applicants. Developing a compelling personal narrative is essential. This might mean explaining how your experience as a black woman has informed your personal growth or future aspirations. Additionally, having strong letters of recommendation can make a world of difference, so consider reaching out to teachers, advisors, or community leaders who can speak to your character, dedication, and potential.

Always ensure you meet all eligibility requirements and hit all deadlines. It might be helpful to make a spreadsheet with each scholarship, their requirements, deadlines and contact information to keep everything organized.

Good luck with your applications!
