Any advice on finding fencing scholarships?

I'm a junior in high school and have been active in fencing for a few years now. I'm hoping to continue pursuing it in college while also getting some financial help. Does anyone know of colleges or organizations that offer fencing scholarships? I’d love some insights on how competitive these scholarships are and any tips on the application process. Sharing experiences from anyone who's gone through this would be awesome!

Most of the NCAA fencing scholarships are Division I and Division II, with the majority being Division I. Not all colleges with fencing programs offer these scholarships, though, so it's essential to research each school you're considering. NCAA allows Division I schools to offer up to five men's and five women's fencing scholarships and Division II schools to offer up to 4.5 men's and 4.5 women's scholarships. Keep in mind these numbers represent the total number of scholarships available for all team members, not just incoming students.

To be competitive, you’ll need to be an excellent fencer and a strong student. College coaches recruit based on athletic ability and fencing skills, but they also appreciate athletes who will contribute to the team culture and the wider campus community. Good grades and high test scores can also benefit you because they can make you eligible for academic scholarships in addition to athletic ones.

Research the colleges with fencing programs, and reach out to the coaches. They will likely want to see evidence of your fencing ability, so consider creating a video showcasing your skills, competitive results, and any awards or recognition you've received in the sport. Also, note the roles you've taken on within your fencing community, such as leading workouts or mentoring less experienced players. Leadership roles highlight your commitment and can make a big difference in the eyes of coaches.

Finally, there's a smaller number of private organizations, like the Absolute Fencing Gear All-Academic Team, that provide fencing scholarships. Qualification requirements for these awards can vary significantly, so make sure to explore these options as well. Keep an eye out for deadlines and make sure your application materials, like transcripts, letters of recommendation, and personal statements, are high-quality and submitted on time.

Remember, these scholarships can be highly competitive, so consider them as part of a broader strategy for funding your education, not as your only source of financial aid. Use portals like Appily to find other scholarships you may qualify for based on academic achievements, community service, or other extracurricular activities. Make sure to fill out the Student Aid Index (SAI) form as well since this can open the door to federal, state, and college-specific financial aid opportunities. Best of luck in your search!
