How do I find and apply for softball scholarships?

I'm interested in playing softball in college, and I’m looking for information and tips on finding and applying for softball scholarships. How competitive are these scholarships, and what tips do you have for making myself a strong candidate?

Securing a softball scholarship requires a combination of athletic talent, academic performance, and strategic positioning. Softball scholarships are indeed competitive due to the limited number of scholarships available per team. However, there are plenty of opportunities for those dedicated to the sport and provides an avenue for financial assistance towards a college education.

First, start with an assessment of your skills. Recruiting sites such as Appily have coaches who provide assessments and assist in determining which level of play best fits the student-athlete's skills (NCAA Division I, II, III, NAIA, and Junior colleges). Remember that Division III schools do not offer athletic scholarships, but they may offer other kinds of financial aid.

Next, ensure you are academically eligible. Athletic scholarships not only require sports skill but also a strong academic record. The NCAA, for instance, has its own academic eligibility criteria. Maintaining strong grades and completing the necessary core courses throughout high school can greatly improve your chances of landing a softball scholarship.

On the field, hone your softball skills. Attend softball camps where you can improve your skills and get exposure to college coaches. College softball coaches often attend these camps searching for promising athletes. Additionally, participating in club softball can also increase your exposure to college scouts.

Develop a strong highlight reel. This can be an impactful tool in your application. It should showcase your athletic ability, understanding of the game, and passion for softball. But, the tape should be concise. Usually, 5 minutes is sufficient. Make sure to include shots that highlight your various skills.

Start reaching out to coaches early. Use various communication channels, such as emails and sport-specific recruiting platforms. When you contact them, express your interest in their program and provide them with important information about yourself (e.g., academic achievements, softball experience, and a link to your highlight tape).

Lastly, be proactive in looking for schools that offer softball scholarships. Websites such as Appily and the NCAA's own website can be good resources for identifying colleges and universities with softball programs. Once you have identified these schools, it's a good idea to also use the schools' websites to find out more information about the softball programs and contact information for the coaches.

Remember, earning an athletic scholarship requires dedication on and off the field. Good luck!
