How Do You Become a Military Photographer?

Photography is my passion, and I wonder about taking this talent to the military. What steps do I need to take to become a military photographer, and what kind of assignments should I expect in this role?

Becoming a military photographer is certainly an intriguing career path, and one that can open up a world of unique opportunities.

1. Educational Background: Having a high school diploma or an equivalent is a basic requirement. Many aspiring photographers choose to pursue a bachelor's degree in photography or a related field, but this is not a mandatory step. However, courses in photography can provide a foundation in techniques and concepts that could be beneficial.

2. Enlistment: To join the military, you have to pass the Physical Fitness Test (PFT). Discuss your interest in becoming a military photographer with a recruiter to understand your options and the specific requirements for each branch of the military. The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) is another prerequisite, which helps the military understand your strengths and identify potential career paths that suit you. A strong score on the ASVAB can boost your chances of getting into the photography field.

3. Job Training: Once enlisted, you'll go through a Basic Combat Training (or equivalent, depending on the branch). Afterward, you'd participate in an Advanced Individual Training (AIT) program or its equivalent depending on the branch you enlist in, which includes training specific to the job of combat photography. This may encompass use of different cameras, techniques in various conditions, video editing, etc.

4. Career Progress: After entering the service, you could work as a military photographer in various capacities and locations, from capturing daily life on a base to documenting combat and reconnaissance missions.

As a military photographer, assignments would be diverse. You could be in the field covering military actions, training exercises, and other military events. These images are often used for military records, promotional materials, or public relations efforts. Another crucial task is to document evidence and other relevant information that can aid in military decision-making.

5. Portfolio: It can be beneficial to have a strong portfolio, showcasing your ability to capture images in a variety of conditions, as it may increase your chances of working on a diverse range of assignments.

Remember, this career path can be demanding, potentially requiring you to work in challenging and risky settings. But the reward comes as you get the chance to capture gripping, impactful images that few other photographers can.
