I'm thinking about joining the military police but unsure what the role truly involves day-to-day. Could anyone share their experiences or what specific duties and expectations are tied to this job?
Military police, often known as MPs, have a twofold mission. They fulfill traditional law enforcement duties but within a military context. They're responsible for ensuring safety and security on military installations by enforcing military laws and regulations. They may work controlling traffic, preventing crime, and responding to all types of emergencies.
The work day for a Military Police officer can vary widely depending on specific assignments. However, many MPs start the day with physical training, followed by checking-in at their respective units where they receive briefings for their shifts. Regular patrol duties on a base could be anything from traffic control to security checks at installation entry points.
MPs may also be tasked with providing security for VIPs or military personnel travelling in potentially hostile territories. In deployed environments, MPs could also lead security patrols, oversee detainee operations, investigate suspected criminal or rule-breaking activities by service members, or train foreign military forces.
Additionally, please note that the training for an MP is more intense than that of a civilian officer. After basic training, one needs to complete additional MP-specific training, which covers everything from law and order operations, to internment operations, to field maneuvers and tactics. Also, depending on which branch of the military you join, the specifics of the MP training may vary.
I hope this helps, and let me know if you have more questions!
