What Grade is Considered Passing in College?

In college, what grade is usually considered passing? I'm trying to understand the grading system a bit better and want to know what to aim for to ensure I'm in good academic standing once I start college.

In most colleges and universities, a passing grade is typically a D- or higher, although exact rules may vary. That being said, scoring just a "passing" grade might not meet all academic requirements, as most institutions require a C or higher for certain needs.

For instance, prerequisite courses often require a C or higher for a student to move on to the next class in the series. Typically, if you're part of a specific program like nursing or engineering, maintaining a certain GPA (often much higher than the minimum passing grade) is necessary to stay in the program.

Even though a D might technically be passing, it could harm your overall GPA and possibly affect your financial aid if it requires maintaining certain academic standards. Therefore, it's crucial not just to aim for "passing" but to strive for as high a grade as possible to maintain your GPA and meet all the academic requirements for your college or university. Always consult your academic advisor or look at your institution's specific policies to be fully informed.
