Opportunities in Military Behavioral Health

Does anyone have insights into military behavioral health jobs? I'm thinking about pursuing a career in this area, and I'm curious about the kind of work involved and the qualifications needed to get started. Any advice would be appreciated!

It's terrific to see your interest in a career in military behavioral health. This field involves working with military personnels, veterans and their families to address and treat psychological concerns, from depression and anxiety to PTSD and traumatic brain injuries. The work can be both challenging and fulfilling, considering the unique experiences and stresses military members and their families face.

As for qualifications, you would typically need at least a Master's degree in Social Work, Psychology, or Counseling. Clinical licensure would also be necessary which would involve supervisory period post your degree, and passing a licensure exam. Some jobs could require a PhD or PsyD in Clinical or Counseling Psychology.

In terms of job roles, opportunities span across counseling, hospital settings, conducting research, developing intervention strategies to administrative roles. You may be working as a Mental Health Counselor, Clinical Social Worker, or Psychologist.

One of the quickest routes to a career in military behavioral health is through the military itself. The U.S. Army and Navy, for example, have Health Professions Scholarship Programs (HPSP) for those pursuing medical, psychological, and other health-related degrees. They cover the cost of tuition, fees, books, and offer a monthly stipend, in return for a service commitment.

If you're interested in a path that doesn't involve enlistment, you can also seek out positions with the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). The VA is one of the largest employers of mental health professionals in the USA.

Don't forget that opportunities for continuing education and specialization are plentiful in this field, so stay open to learning throughout your career. Good luck in your journey!
