What's the process for getting accounting jobs in the military?

I'm interested in accounting and considering the military after high school. How do accounting jobs in the military work? Do you need a degree first, or can you join right after high school and get trained?

Pursuing a Military Occupational Specialty (MOS) related to finance or accounting in the military can provide a viable path toward your desired career. Here's a basic path you can follow:

1. Enlistment: Unlike some professions in the military, such as being a military lawyer or doctor, you're not required to have a degree to get into a finance or accounting role. You can enlist right out of high school.

2. Basic Combat Training (BCT): The first step is to complete your Basic Combat Training, which is a requirement for anyone joining the military. This is where you'll learn the basic soldiering skills.

3. Advanced Individual Training (AIT): After BCT, you'll move on to Advanced Individual Training for your chosen MOS. There are several MOS that might align with your interest in accounting, such as Financial Management Technician in the Army (MOS 36B) or a Financial Management and Comptroller in the Air Force (6F0X1) where you'll receive specific training for your role.

Advisor roles and responsibilities can vary but usually include activities like financial management operations, disbursing, budgeting, accounting, and cost management. A big part of these roles involves maintaining financial records, processing payments, managing budgets, and preparing accounting reports.

It's also worth noting that many of the skills and qualifications you gain through your military experience can be transferable to civilian roles in accounting, especially those in government agencies or defense contractors.

Remember, being on active duty doesn't prevent you from furthering your education. Many service members take advantage of tuition assistance programs to get their degrees while serving. You may also consider completing a degree program in accounting after your service, utilizing the G.I. Bill to help fund your education.

The best way to assess your options is to talk to a recruiter who can provide the most current and personalized advice based on your interests and qualifications.
