What jobs are available when you get out of the military?

I'm considering the military but worried about future job prospects. What kind of careers can you pursue after serving? Are employers generally open to hiring veterans, and do any fields stand out?

As a service member transitioning out of the military, there are a variety of career paths you can consider, and veterans also bring with them a unique skill set highly valued by employers.

Firstly, many veterans continue their public service by going into government or law enforcement roles. Federal agencies, like the Department of Homeland Security, are known to actively recruit veterans. Law enforcement also tends to value the discipline and structure learned in the military.

For veterans interested in healthcare or social services, they are often great candidates for roles in hospitals, mental health facilities, and nonprofits. Their experience dealing with high-stress situations, coupled with their commitment to service, can make them well-suited to these fields.

Those interested in technology can find opportunities in cybersecurity or IT roles. In fact, the military usually provides advanced tech training which can be a great asset in the civilian job market.

The skills acquired in the military like teamwork, leadership, responsibility, problem-solving and more are highly valued in numerous areas, like project management or operations.

Furthermore, many companies express a commitment to hiring veterans and have veteran recruitment programs, such as Google, Amazon, and Lockheed Martin, to name a few.

Finally, an often-overlooked path is entrepreneurship. Veterans bring to the table many qualities that are beneficial for starting a business, such as discipline from serving in structured environments and perseverance through challenges.

Remember to utilize resources for veterans when making this transition. Career-coaching services and job search platforms tailored for veterans can be valuable in navigating your post-military career. You can also leverage your status as a veteran to apply for additional training and educational opportunities to further expand your career options.

Remember, transitioning to civilian life is a process, and there's a broad support network available to make this shift as smooth as possible. Plan ahead and examine your areas of interest and you're sure to find a rewarding career path post service.
