Phone Use at West Point Academy

I'm considering attending West Point, but I'm not sure how phone usage works there. Can cadets have their phones, and are there any restrictions? Would love to hear from current or past cadets!

During the initial portion of their time at West Point, particularly during the Beast Barracks summer training period before the first academic year starts, phone usage can be heavily restricted. Cadets often have their phones confiscated during this six-week training phase, although this may vary. This is designed to help new cadets focus on their training and adjust to the disciplined life at the academy.

However, once academic classes begin, cadets generally are allowed their phones back. They may use their devices during personal time, commonly referred to as "hours of relaxation". But do keep in mind that usage still can be restricted during hours of duty, and certain manners are expected to be followed when using the phone on the post, such as not walking and talking on the phone at the same time.
