International Students at West Point Academy

I'm an international student considering applying to West Point Academy. What are the requirements for international students, and how competitive is it to get in as a non-U.S. citizen?

Enrolling at West Point as an international student presents unique challenges, but it's certainly possible. The United States Military Academy at West Point does accept a limited number of international students each year. Keep in mind that it's a highly competitive process, both for U.S. and international applicants, and that there are specific requirements in place for non-U.S. students.

First and foremost, you must be nominated by the government of your own country. Your nomination will then be judged on the basis of the same criteria as U.S. nominations. Bear in mind though, the number of nominations West Point receives often exceeds the number of slots available, so this is a competitive process.

After receiving a nomination, you must fulfill the same general requirements as U.S. applicants, which consist of demonstrating high academic achievement, physical aptitude, and leadership potential. To gauge your academic performance, West Point will look at your school grades and standardized test scores if available. Your character, leadership, and physical aptitude are evaluated by your high school record, medical examinations, a fitness assessment, and possibly an interview.

One thing to note is that language proficiency is crucial, as West Point conducts all its classes in English. If English is not your first language, demonstrating English proficiency through a standardized test like TOEFL may be required.

Finally, know that while U.S. cadets are automatically committed to serving in the U.S. Army for eight years (five on active duty, and three in the reserves) after graduation, international graduates return to their home countries to serve in their nations’ armed forces.

West Point's international program is quite competitive with only a limited number of slots, so it's a good idea to consider other post-secondary options as well. Do take the time to research West Point thoroughly and consider reaching out to them for additional help with the application process. Best of luck in your academic endeavors!
