Military training opportunities for high school grads?

I'm considering joining the military after high school mainly for job training. What kinds of job training does the military offer, and are there specific programs I should look into?

The military offers a wide variety of job training opportunities, all categorized into what are known as Military Occupation Specialties (MOS). Each branch of the armed forces – Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard, and Space Force – offers different opportunities, so the best for you really depends on your personal career goals.

The Army, for example, offers training in fields such as Aviation, Engineering, and Information Technology. The Navy has opportunities like Nuclear Power School for engineering-minded individuals, as well as Aviation Maintenance and Radar and Sonar schools. The Air Force and Space Force are known for their programs in electronics and technology-related fields. The Marines have a broad scope, with options like Aircraft Maintenance, Combat Support, and Intelligence. The Coast Guard has fields like Law Enforcement and Maritime Enforcement Specialists, among others.

When it comes to specific programs, it is beneficial to look into ROTC (Reserve Officers' Training Corps) programs if you're planning to attend college either before or after joining the military. These programs offer leadership training and can help cover some or all of your college tuition. ROTC programs can lead to a commission as an officer upon graduation, which tends to offer more diverse job training opportunities compared to enlisting directly.

If you're looking for apprenticeship opportunities, the United Services Military Apprenticeship Program (USMAP) is also worth considering. This is a formal military training program that provides active duty Coast Guard, Marine Corps, and Navy service members the opportunity to improve their job skills and to complete their civilian apprenticeship requirements while they are on active duty.

Before you decide, get in touch with a local recruiter or look into each branch's official website where you can get a comprehensive look at all the opportunities they offer. Regularly review your options and consider what fields appeal to you most. It's always best to find a field that aligns with your personal interests and long-term career goals. That said, your ultimate choice of branch and specific job training program should depend on where you see yourself in future. Plan carefully, and seek guidance from those who've been there before who can provide real-world perspectives.
