What are the prerequisites for the US Military Academy at West Point?

Hey, I'm a junior considering applying to the US Military Academy at West Point. Can someone clarify what the prerequisites are? I get that it's competitive, but what academic or physical qualifications do I need to focus on before applying?

Sure, happy to help. West Point has rigorous prerequisites as it is not just an institution for higher learning but also a military academy.

Let's talk about the academic qualifications first. You'll need to have a strong high school record. Specifically, West Point recommends having four years of English, math, and a foreign language, plus two years of a laboratory science course like chemistry or physics, and a year of U.S. history, to be competently prepared for their curriculum.

Standardized tests are also crucial. For the SAT, a mix of Math and Evidence-Based Reading and Writing scores above 1200 is usually competitive, considering the middle 50% range of accepted students. For the ACT, a composite score above 28 is typically competitive. Please note, however, that no minimum score guarantees admission or disqualifies you—applications are evaluated holistically.

As for physical qualifications, West Point requires you to be in excellent physical condition. Each candidate must take the Candidate Fitness Assessment (CFA), which includes events such as a basketball throw, push-ups, pull-ups (or the flexed arm hang for females), a 300-yard shuttle run, sit-ups, and a 1-mile run.

Beyond academics and physical fitness, West Point also looks for leadership potential. Being involved in extracurricular activities, particularly where you've demonstrated leadership or teamwork—like sports teams, volunteering, or student government—can significantly increase your chances.

Lastly, you must be eligible to receive a security clearance, must not be married or have legal obligation to support a child, must be a U.S. citizen (with some minor exceptions), and must be between 17 and 23 years old on July 1st of the year you start at West Point.

Keep in mind that gaining acceptance to West Point also involves securing a nomination, often from a U.S. Senator or Representative.

Please check the West Point admissions website for the most current and detailed information. Hope this gives you a good initial overview though!
