What's on the ACT exam?

I'm starting to plan for taking the ACT, and I'm a bit stressed about what topics and sections are included in the exam. Can someone break down what I should prepare for?

Sure, happy to break it down for you! The ACT is composed of four multiple-choice sections, and an optional writing section.

1. English: This section tests your understanding of English grammar and effective writing techniques. It focuses on punctuation, grammar and usage, sentence structure, strategy, style, and organization.

2. Mathematics: The math portion includes topics from pre-algebra, elementary algebra, intermediate algebra, coordinate geometry, plane geometry, and trigonometry. Starting in April 2025 however, this section will have only four answer choices, instead of five.

3. Reading: The reading section assesses your ability to read closely, reason logically about texts using evidence, and integrate information from multiple sources. It includes passages in the subjects of social studies, natural sciences, literary narrative, and humanities.

4. Science: This section measures your interpretation, analysis, evaluation, reasoning, and problem-solving skills in the natural sciences. It presents several scientific scenarios, each followed by a series of multiple-choice questions. However, keep in mind that starting from 2025, this portion will be optional.

5. Writing (Optional): In this section, you will write an essay presenting a perspective on an issue. You'll need to write a coherent and meaningful essay that elaborates on your viewpoint, compares it to others, and demonstrates your facility with language.

Each section of the ACT (excluding the writing) is scored on a scale of 1 to 36, with the final ACT score being an average of these four sections. The writing section is scored separately.

For studying, I advise focusing on understanding the types of questions that will be asked and the knowledge needed for those questions. Consider taking some practice tests, as they can help you understand your strengths and weaknesses.

Remember to check the updated policies of the colleges you're considering, especially for the science section of the ACT given the changes coming in 2025. Good luck with your preparation!
