What Are the Army's Expectations for Cadets at West Point?

As someone interested in applying to West Point, I'm curious about what the Army expects from cadets during their time there. What are the academic, physical, and leadership requirements or experiences current cadets might share?

West Point's mission is to educate, train, and inspire the Corps of Cadets so that each graduate is a commissioned leader of character, committed to the values of Duty, Honor, and Country. In order to fulfill this mission, there are high expectations in the areas of academics, physical fitness, and leadership.

Academically, the curriculum at West Point is rigorous. Cadets are offered more than 40 academic majors, from Humanities to STEM fields. You'd be expected to maintain a solid GPA, demonstrate a strong work ethic and a consistent commitment to disciplined study.

Physical training is also an integral part of the West Point experience, with the aim to develop physically strong individuals capable of performing effectively as officers in the Army. Cadets are expected to participate in a variety of physical training activities, from team sports to fitness training. You'll have to pass the Army Physical Fitness Test (APFT), which includes push-ups, sit-ups, and a 2-mile run. Each year you'll expected to improve your scores; should you theoretically fail to meet these standards, you may have to go through remedial programs.

As for leadership, cadets all hold various leadership positions during their four years, rotating positions each semester. These positions range from squad leader to first captain. Through these experiences, you will learn essential skills like problem-solving, decision-making, adaptability, and the ability to function under stress.

Additionally, cadets are required to adhere to West Point's Honor Code, which states "A cadet will not lie, cheat, steal, or tolerate those who do." In essence, personal integrity and character development are fundamental aspects of the West Point experience.

Bear in mind this is a very brief overview, and the actual experiences and expectations can be quite varied and complex. The best way to truly understand West Point expectations would be to speak with current cadets or recent graduates, or join programs such as the Summer Leaders Experience (SLE) which offers a week-long immersion into life at West Point.
