Path from military to FBI jobs?

I'm interested in working for the FBI after serving in the military. What steps should I take to make this transition, and what specific military roles or experiences would be advantageous for a future FBI career?

Your plan to join the FBI after your military service is quite feasible given the transferable skills and experiences you'll likely gain. Understandably, your choice of military role can have significant implications on your transition.

FBI values experiences in military intelligence, military police, public affairs, language specialists, and cybersecurity or IT-related military mos. Experience in these roles can help you develop the necessary skills in the field of security and investigation which are valued in the FBI.

Moreover, having top-secret security clearance from your military service would be a significant advantage, as federal agencies, including the FBI, generally value this. You might gain this clearance in certain military roles involving access to classified information.

Continue your education while in the military if you haven't already completed a bachelor's degree, as this is required for most FBI positions. Many military personnel leverage their GI Bill benefits to pursue their degree during or after their service.

Languages are in high demand in the FBI, so if you're already fluent in a second language, or have the opportunity to learn one during your military service, that could be a significant benefit to your FBI application.

Once you're ready to make the transition, consider utilizing the FBI's Veterans Career Information program, which is designed to help military veterans understand the range of career options in the bureau and how their skills fit in.

Lastly, maintain good physical and mental health, as the FBI has rigorous physical fitness requirements and the demanding nature of the job demands a strong mental constitution. The conditioning and resilience you build in the military would indeed help.

Please note that these are just possibilities and there are many routes to a career in the FBI from the military. Focus on making the most of your military service, gaining relevant skills/experience, and ensuring you meet the FBI's basic eligibility criteria. Then tailor your path based on your career goals and personal interests. Good luck with your journey!
