Can you secure a desk job in the military with diabetes?

I've been interested in joining the military, but I have diabetes. Would it still be possible to get a desk job, or does my condition disqualify me completely? I'm open to various roles, but want to be realistic.

Yes, there may be opportunities to work in a civilian capacity within the Department of Defense or other government agencies supporting the military. Civilian jobs can range broadly, from administrative roles to engineering or healthcare, depending on your skills and interests.

However, direct enlistment in the military can be trickier with diabetes. As per the Department of Defense instructions, individuals with a history of insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus are generally disqualified from enlisting, due to potential risks with intense physical demands in various environments, among other factors. This regulation applies to all military roles, even non-combat or desk jobs. That said, sometimes waivers can be granted, but these are rare and depend on specific circumstances.

Additionally, the military has a large number of civilian employees, including desk jobs, which are not subject to the same medical regulations as serving personnel. These positions typically are filled through the federal civil service system.

Please bear in mind that each situation is unique, and your medical and military career options are something you should discuss in detail with your healthcare provider and a military recruitment officer, if you choose to pursue this path. They would have the most accurate and up-to-date information on qualifications and possible exceptions or accommodations.
