Are there military jobs that don't require a security clearance?

I'm thinking about joining the military, but I'm concerned about the security clearance process. Are there roles within the military that don't need a security clearance, and if so, what are they?

Yes, there are certainly roles in the military that do not require a security clearance. However, it's important to note that the need for a security clearance largely depends on the specific job and the information you'll have access to.

If the role does not involve access to classified information or sensitive areas, you're less likely to need a security clearance. For instance, combat specialty occupations such as infantrymen, aircraft launch and recovery officers, armor officers, artillery officers, and so on typically do not involve handling sensitive information. Similarly, some support roles such as food service, vehicle and machinery mechanical occupations, or certain healthcare roles may not require a security clearance.

That being said, even though these roles may not initially require a security clearance, circumstances can change based on need or deployment, and clearance might become necessary at a later point. For instance, if you get promoted or your duties change, you may need to get clearance. Additionally, while these roles might not require a high-level security clearance, all military personnel undergo a level of background screening upon enlistment.

Therefore, while it's ultimately possible to pursue a military career without a security clearance, it might be worth considering why the security clearance process is a concern, as this process is designed to ensure the security of military operations and the nation. It's also worth speaking to a recruiter, who can provide more specific guidance based on your interests and circumstances.
