Are there jobs for women with special roles in the military?

I'm a junior in high school and considering joining the military. I'm curious if there are roles specifically for women or if all roles are open to everyone equally. Any advice or insights?

As of 2016, the U.S. Department of Defense officially opened up all combat jobs in the U.S. military to both men and women. Prior to this, many combat positions were closed to women. So, in terms of specific roles in the armed forces, women can qualify for and serve in any enlisted or officer position, as long as they meet the specific physical, educational, or experiential criteria.

This is not to say there aren't certain considerations or resources specifically available for women. For instance, the military has taken steps to improve accessibility and inclusion for women, such as implementing policies and practices to deal with factors like sexual harassment, discrimination, and equal opportunities.

And while they are not specific "roles" per se, there are organizations and programs within the military specifically aimed at supporting women in the service. For instance, the DOD has the Defense Advisory Committee on Women in the Services (DACOWITS), which advises on matters relating to the recruitment, retention, treatment, employment, integration, and overall welfare of women in the armed forces.

My advice to you would be to thoroughly research the different branches of the military, the roles within them, and the requirements for those roles to ensure they align with your strengths, interests, and long-term goals. Engagement with programs such as the ROTC in college can provide valuable insights and preparation as well.

Remember, service in the military is a significant commitment, so taking the time to understand what that entails is crucial to making an informed decision. It's also essential to communicate with military recruiters, veterans, and currently serving military personnel who are close to you for a practical perspective. They can offer valuable experiences and knowledge about life in the military and can help guide you towards potential roles that might be a good fit for you.
