Is NASA a career possibility after military service?

I've always been fascinated by space and NASA. If I join the military, would that experience help me land a job at NASA later? What roles at NASA might value military experience the most?

Absolutely, NASA careers following military service can align very well, as both typically require strong leadership, problem-solving abilities, and teamwork skills. After serving in the military, many of the advanced technical, leadership, and specialized skills individuals acquire can be applied to various positions within NASA.

In particular, NASA astronaut program has a history of recruiting former military officers, especially those with a background in aviation, due to their experience with high-pressure scenarios and critical decision-making skills. In fact, many astronauts have a background in the military, including Buzz Aldrin, a former Air Force pilot, and Chris Cassidy, a former Navy SEAL.

If you're interested in engineering and sciences, there are roles in spacecraft design, mission planning, and other research positions that could benefit from military experience. For example, engineering roles often require project management skills, which you may have developed during military service.

Another area that would value military experience would be security. NASA facilities, like any governmental institution, require tight security measures. Leadership roles in these departments could be a good fit for former military personnel.

Before making the transition, you may want to consider obtaining some additional education or certification in your area of interest if you haven't already, as many positions within NASA also require advanced degrees or specialized training.

Remember, though, that every job seeker's path is unique, so do thorough research and seek guidance to make the best choices for your individual career plan. Good luck!
