Is it possible to apply for a government job after serving in the military?

I've heard that veterans might have special pathways or preferences when applying for government jobs. Can anyone share how military experience can impact your chances of landing a government job after service?

Military service can significantly improve your chances of securing a government job thanks to the Veterans' Preference system. The federal government gives certain advantages to veterans when they apply for federal jobs. It's not a guarantee of employment, but it does mean your application may be given preferential consideration over non-veteran applicants with the same qualifications.

There are essentially two levels of Veterans' Preference:

- 5-point preference: Awarded to veterans who served during a war, or who received a campaign medal for service in a campaign or expedition, or were discharged for a service-connected disability, or for injury or illness that was aggravated in the line of duty.

- 10-point preference: Awarded to veterans who are severely disabled or have received the Purple Heart, or are a spouse, widow(er), or mother of a disabled or deceased veteran.

Furthermore, some federal agencies can use noncompetitive hiring authority for veterans. This means they can hire an eligible veteran without having to go through the normal competitive selection process – so your military service could expedite your path to a government job.

Make sure you answer questions about your military service accurately and highlight relevant experience for the job you're applying for - just like any other job application. This will give your potential employer the best chance to understand the value you bring as a veteran.
