Understanding U.S. Naval Academy Costs

I'm trying to figure out the costs associated with attending the U.S. Naval Academy. I know it's a service academy, so things are a bit different. Can anyone break down what expenses I'll still have to cover as a student there?

Attending one of the U.S. service academies, including the U.S. Naval Academy (USNA), is an unique experience when it comes to costs. While many traditional expenses such as tuition, room and board, and basic medical and dental care are covered by the U.S. government, there are nonetheless certain costs that you or your family will need to cover.

Upon acceptance to the USNA, you will be required to pay a deposit for uniforms, books and other various items. This deposit is usually around $2,000. However, keep in mind that you don't have to pay this out of pocket. This deposit is actually deducted from your monthly midshipmen pay over your four years at the Academy.

As a midshipman, you will receive a monthly salary. However, most of it will be directed towards your mandatory expenses like uniforms, books, haircuts, and laundry. After these expenditures, you'll generally have a small sum, often less than $100 a month, as personal spending money.

As for food and housing, all meals and accommodations are provided by the academy. That means you don't need to concern yourself with costs for meal plans or dorm rooms, unlike at most traditional colleges. And as I mentioned earlier, basic medical and dental care are also covered.

Also, keep in mind that after graduation, you'll be required to serve in the Navy or Marines for a minimum of five years as a commissioned officer. This service commitment is another cost, in terms of time and commitment, but keep in mind it also includes receiving officer's pay and benefits.

In conclusion, while there are certain costs associated with attending the U.S. Naval Academy, a significant portion of your expenses will be covered. The overall financial burden tends to be less compared to many traditional institutions, considering that tuition, housing, and meal costs are all covered by the academy.
