What teaching jobs are available in the military?

I love teaching and am curious about how I could pursue this passion within the military. Are there opportunities for educators, and if so, what are the requirements for teaching in a military environment?

Absolutely, the military offers a wide array of opportunities for individuals passionate about education.

First, military instructors are essential personnel within each branch of the military. They are responsible for teaching new recruits the basics of military service, as well as providing training and education to enlisted personnel and officers. These roles can cover everything from technical skills, such as how to operate certain equipment, to more broad topics, such as military history and protocol. Serving in a training and education role within the military typically requires that you have a particular set of skills or knowledge that you can pass along.

Second, the Department of Defense (DoD) operates its own education system, the Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA). DoDEA provides K-12 education to military-connected students both in the U.S. and overseas. To be considered for a DoDEA teaching position, you need to meet standard requirements for teaching in the respective grade level. That can include a bachelor's degree, a teaching certification, and relevant experience.

Lastly, you may also find opportunities at the military academies such as West Point, the Naval Academy, and Air Force Academy. These institutes employ a host of civilian and military faculty members to provide college-level education to future military officers.

Keep in mind, though, serving as a military instructor, and/or teaching at a military academy typically requires you to be an enlisted member or officer, which involves meeting all the military's enlistment or commissioning requirements. On the other hand, teaching within the DoDEA system can be done as a civilian employee.

Regardless of the path you choose, teaching within the military is a unique and fulfilling way to serve your country, educate future military leaders, and contribute to the armed forces in a crucial way.
