I'm curious about what kinds of events take place at the Naval Academy. Are there any events that prospective students or the general public can attend? I'm particularly interested in any signature events that highlight the academy's culture.
The United States Naval Academy (USNA) hosts several major events across the calendar year, many of which highlight the academy’s rich traditions and allow prospective students and the public to get a sense of the institution's ethos.
1. Induction Day (I-Day): Occurring at the end of June, I-day is meant to mark the beginning of Plebe Summer, a rigorous 7-week training program for incoming freshmen, known as plebes. While much of the day involves behind-the-scenes administrative processes (medical examinations, uniform fittings, etc.), families can usually attend the Oath of Office ceremony that concludes the day.
2. Plebe Parents' Weekend: Usually held in August, after Plebe Summer has finished. This is the first time plebes have any significant time off and a chance for parents to visit their students. It's a great idea for prospective students to visit during this time and enjoy a snapshot of the Academy's culture at the beginning of a Midshipman's journey.
3. Homecoming: In fall, the Academy hosts a weekend of activities that include athletic events, alumni class reunions, a parade, and more. The public is usually invited to watch the parade and the football game.
4. The Army-Navy game: One of the most famous college football games in the nation, the Army-Navy game traditionally takes place in December. While the location of the game alternates between Baltimore and Philadelphia, there are many related events back in Annapolis regardless of where the game itself is held.
5. Commissioning Week: This week of events in May celebrates graduating midshipmen before they are commissioned as officers in the Navy or Marine Corps. Events include Blue Angels demonstrations, parades, concerts, and culminate in the graduation and commissioning ceremony itself.
Do keep in mind that due to COVID-19, the public’s access to these events might be different from previous years, and access or permission is subject to change. To be sure, you'd want to check the USNA's official calendar and announcements.
