What is the Naval Academy Prep School like?

I'm considering applying to the Naval Academy, and I've heard about the Naval Academy Prep School. Can anyone share what the experience is like? Is it a good preparation for the academy itself?

The Naval Academy Preparatory School (NAPS) is indeed designed as a solid preparation for the Naval Academy. It is located in Newport, Rhode Island, and serves as a 10-month long preparatory program for those who have been selected and have accepted appointments to the United States Naval Academy.

The program at NAPS focuses on strengthening the academic, physical, and moral foundation of the candidates, making it a rigorous and wholesome experience. It aims to build resilience, tenacity, and camaraderie amongst candidates, which is important during their time at the Naval Academy. As a candidate there, you can strengthen your foundational knowledge, especially in Mathematics, Chemistry, English, and Physics.

When it comes to physical fitness, NAPS puts a significant emphasis on it. Candidates are expected to participate in various athletic activities, from team to intramural sports, all complemented by an expansive physical training program. This introduces candidates to the physical expectations of the Navy, thus making their transition to the Naval Academy smoother.

The overarching theme at NAPS is leadership development, a precursor to the expectation at the Naval Academy. Essential values such as honor, courage, and commitment, integrity, and respect for diversity are woven into the fabric of the program. The preparation school prioritizes character development as this is a vital facet of military service.

Bear in mind, however, that while NAPS can be a valuable stepping stone to the Naval Academy, it's also a highly competitive program. Acceptance into the final academy is contingent upon successful completion of the preparatory school's requirements.

So in summary, NAPS offers an immersive, well-rounded experience that does an excellent job preparing candidates for the rigors of the Naval Academy. If you're dedicated and eager to serve, it can be an invaluable opportunity to prepare yourself academically, physically, and morally for the Naval Academy.
