What is the United States Naval Academy Summer STEM Program Like?

Has anyone participated in the United States Naval Academy Summer STEM Program? I'm thinking about applying, and I’d love to know what the experience is like and if it’s worth it.

Sure! The United States Naval Academy Summer STEM program is a week-long, residential program designed for rising 9th-11th graders who have an interest in science, technology, engineering, and math. The program aims to inspire students to pursue these fields while giving them a taste of the Naval Academy's rigorous academic and professional training programs.

Throughout your stay, your days will be filled with hands-on activities and workshops. You'll have the opportunity to participate in real-world applications of math and science principles. You might work on projects in fields like robotics, civil engineering, cybersecurity, or even forensics. The activities are led by faculty members and midshipmen who are studying these fields.

In addition to academics, the program also exposes students to life at the Academy. You'll live in the dorms, eat in the dining hall, and participate in physical and group-building activities, which can provide insights into the type of discipline and teamwork that define the Naval Academy.

Now, is it worth it? Many students find the experience valuable due to several reasons: exploring their interest in STEM fields, experiencing the discipline and rigor of a military academy, and having the chance to connect with mentors and peers with similar interests.

But it's good to remember that this program won't significantly enhance your college application by itself. It's primarily about self-exploration and learning, not about enhancing your resume. Furthermore, even if you attended the program, there's no guarantee of admission into the Naval Academy.

Ultimately, you have to decide if the program aligns with your interests and whether the commitment is something you're ready for. Consider your interest in STEM, your curiosity about life at a military academy, and your willingness to step out of your comfort zone.
