Joining the US Naval Academy Tennis Team

Does anyone know what the recruitment process is like for joining the tennis team at the US Naval Academy? I'm currently a junior and am seriously considering applying.

Sure, I can help clarify the process. The process of recruitment for sports, including tennis, at US Naval Academy (and other service academies) traditionally involves a few steps. First and foremost, maintaining outstanding athletic and academic records is paramount, as the US Naval Academy has high requirements in both areas.

To get on the coaches' radar, you should consider reaching out to them directly. You can find their contact information on the tennis team's webpage on the US Naval Academy's athletics website. Send your sports resume which should include your tennis achievements, rankings, and video highlights. Don't hesitate to include any athletic awards or recognition you may have received.

In addition to athletics, you will need to complete the traditional application process, which includes receiving a nomination, usually from a U.S. Congressman or U.S. Senator, completing a physical aptitude exam, and meeting strict medical qualifications. Keep in mind, this is a very competitive process, so it will benefit you to ensure you excel in other areas aside from tennis, such as academics and leadership roles in your extracurriculars.

Lastly, summer seminars are offered for rising seniors interested in applying to the academy. They offer a first-hand look at the life of a midshipman and can increase your familiarity with the academy.

Do remember that commitment to any service academy also means a commitment to serve in the military after graduation, so make sure to consider whether this path aligns with your personal and career goals. Best of luck in your pursuit!
