What are the requirements for getting into the Naval Academy?

I'm considering applying to the Naval Academy and was wondering what the application requirements are. What kind of GPA and test scores do they look for, and are there any standout extracurriculars that would help?

Applying to the United States Naval Academy (USNA) is a very involved process and has requirements beyond those of many traditional universities. Here are specific areas to focus on:

1. Academics: Your GPA should ideally be above 3.6 on a 4.0 scale, which is the approximate average for accepted students. In addition to a strong GPA, you should have taken a rigorous curriculum throughout high school, including courses in English, math, and physical science.

2. Standardized Tests: The SAT and ACT scores of accepted students tend to be competitive. For SAT, successful applicants typically score between 1200 and 1400, while for ACT, a composite score of between 26 and 31 is common. Although these are not strict cutoffs, scoring within or above these ranges will enhance your application.

3. Extracurricular Activities: Military or leadership-oriented activities such as JROTC, Civil Air Patrol, or leadership roles in clubs, athletics, or community service organizations can boost your application. Sporting activities are particularly valued, given the physical demands of attending a military academy. Schools look for involvement in sports as an indication you'll be able to handle the physical rigors of military training.

4. Fitness Assessment: Candidates must pass a Candidate Fitness Assessment, which includes physical tests such as a 1-mile run, push-ups, pull-ups, crunches, and a "basketball throw" test.

5. Medical Evaluation: Candidates must pass a medical evaluation, because the Navy places a high priority on physical fitness and health.

6. Nomination: One of the unique requirements of the Service Academies is the requirement of a nomination, generally from a U.S. Senator, U.S. Representative, or the Vice President.

Finally, remember that the Naval Academy looks for integrity and character as key qualities in its students, so be sure to give examples of leadership opportunities, community involvement, or other instances in your application where these traits are demonstrated.
