Applying to the United States Naval Academy (USNA) in Annapolis requires a process that's different from your typical college application. To meet the basic eligibility requirements, candidates must be U.S. citizens between the ages of 17 and 23, unmarried, and have no dependents.

Academically, the USNA considers your high school coursework, your grades, and standardized test scores. While they don't specify a minimum GPA, competitive applicants typically have strong academic records, particularly in math and science courses. Similarly, they don't list minimum SAT/ACT scores, but the middle 50% of admitted students typically have an SAT Math score between 620 and 750, and an SAT Evidence-Based Reading and Writing score between 620 and 720. For the ACT, the middle 50% typically score between 26 and 31 in English, and between 27 and 32 in Math.

Candidates must also pass the Candidate Fitness Assessment, a physical fitness test. The test includes a basketball throw, pull-ups/flexed arm hang, a shuttle run, crunches, push-ups, and a one-mile run.

Perhaps one of the most unique elements of applying to the USNA is the need for a nomination, typically from your local Congressperson, Senator, or the Vice President of the U.S. There are alternate sources of nominations as well, and some candidates even qualify to apply through more than one source.

Aside from these formal requirements, the USNA also reviews applicants holistically. Leadership and community involvement are important components, so highlight any leadership roles or service in your application. Involvement in sports or physical activities can also be beneficial due to the physical demands of life at a military academy.

Finally, keep in mind that attending the Naval Academy involves completing military service after graduation. Be sure that you fully understand this commitment and that it aligns with your long-term goals. You may want to consider reaching out to current students or graduates of the Academy for their perspectives and advice as you navigate the application process.

Best of luck with your application!
