What are my chances of getting into the Naval Academy?

I'm a high school junior interested in applying to the Naval Academy, especially Annapolis. I have decent grades and some extracurriculars, but I'm wondering what specific things they look for in applicants? Any tips on strengthening my application would be awesome.

While the Naval Academy definitely considers academic performance and extracurriculars, they take a holistic approach to admissions, looking at a broad range of factors to get a comprehensive view of you as a potential midshipman.

Academically, it helps to have a strong performance in challenging courses, particularly those related to mathematics and sciences. The Naval Academy puts a lot of weight on your performance in these areas given the technical nature of much of the curriculum there. High standardized test scores, if you have them, can also be beneficial.

In terms of extracurriculars, leadership roles can be a significant asset as they value demonstrated potential for leadership. This could be anything from being the captain of a sports team to leading a club or other organization. Demonstrating your ability to handle responsibility and lead is a great way to catch the attention of the Admissions Board at the Naval Academy.

Physical fitness is also a major factor in the admissions process at the Naval Academy. They require candidates to pass a physical fitness assessment which includes a one-mile run, pull-ups or flexed-arm hang, abdominal crunches, push-ups, and a basketball throw. Preparing for and performing well on this test is crucial.

Moreover, a key element to the application process is securing a nomination, typically from a U.S. Representative or Senator, though there are other sources of nominations too. This process is separate from your Naval Academy application and often requires its own set of application materials.

Finally, your dedication to serving your country will be a large part of your application. Participating in Junior ROTC, Civil Air Patrol, Sea Cadets, or a similar program can show your commitment. You will also write essays where you can further demonstrate your desire to serve.
