What are the Naval Academy application requirements?

I'm researching the Naval Academy and want to make sure I meet all the necessary application requirements. Does anyone know what they specifically look for in applicants?

Applying to the United States Naval Academy is different than applying to most colleges. Let's break down the process:

1. Academic Requirements: You need to have a solid academic background. Though they don't have a strict GPA cutoff, most midshipmen admitted have GPA's above 3.5. Rigorous coursework like APs, IB, or Honors classes is also favored. For standardized tests, they no longer list minimum SAT or ACT requirements, but you should aim for at least a 600 in each section of the SAT, or a 26 in each section of the ACT.

2. Physical Aptitude Exam: Applicants must take the Candidate Fitness Assessment, which includes basketball throw, pull-ups/flexed-arm hang, shuttle run, crunches, push-ups, and a 1-mile run.

3. Medical Exam: All candidates must meet specific medical qualifications and will be examined by the Department of Defense Medical Review Board.

4. Nomination: Perhaps the most unique part is that you are required to obtain a nomination. These nominations generally come from U.S. Representatives, U.S. Senators, the Vice President, and the President.

5. Interview: If you pass these initial criteria, you may be invited for an interview with the academy's admissions staff or a representative.

6. Extracurriculars and leadership: Beyond the academics and physical fitness, the Naval Academy also looks for leadership potential and character. Having leadership roles in clubs, sports teams, or community service can bolster your application.

7. Background check: If offered admission, you'll also have to pass a background check before fully accepted.

Hopefully, these steps will give you a clearer idea of what you need to apply to the Naval Academy. Remember, getting in is only the first step. The Naval Academy is a demanding environment, so make sure you're not just applying because it's a prestigious school, but because you're passionate about serving your country. Good luck!
