What's the Naval Academy Candidate Weekend like?

I'm considering applying to the Naval Academy and I heard about the Candidate Weekend. Can anyone share what the experience is like? Is it a good way to learn about life at the academy? Any tips for making the most of it?

The Naval Academy Candidate's Weekend is a great opportunity to get a firsthand experience of what life at the Naval Academy is like. Throughout the weekend, you'll stay overnight in Bancroft Hall, the largest single dormitory in the world, and you're paired with a current Midshipman who is your "host" during your visit.

The Weekend offers a jam-packed schedule to give you a comprehensive overview of the Academy. A typical agenda might include a tour of the campus, including Bancroft Hall, classrooms, athletic facilities, and the chapel. The weekend often includes attending classes, so you're able to see the level of academic rigor at the Naval Academy.

You'll also get a taste of the physical and military aspects of Midshipmen life, through observing or participating in physical training and drill practice. You'll likely be given the chance to meet with current Midshipmen in various settings, which gives you an invaluable opportunity to ask questions and gain personal insights about what it's like to study there.

To make the most out of your Candidate Weekend, be proactive. Ask questions—about academics, extracurriculars, life in the military, anything that you're curious about. Current Midshipmen are a wealth of information and are usually more than happy to share their experiences.

Additionally, don't be afraid to network with other candidates. Who knows—you may end up attending the academy with some of them! Lastly, immerse yourself in the experience as much as you can. This is a unique opportunity to “try on” the Midshipmen lifestyle and see how well it fits with your personal goals and values.

Lastly, be yourself. Don’t try to pretend to be someone you’re not because you think it’s what the Naval Academy wants. Authenticity is key and will lead you to the right decision about whether the Naval Academy is a good fit for you. Remember, this weekend is as much about you evaluating the academy as the academy evaluating you.
