What are the economics classes like at the Naval Academy?

I'm interested in pursuing economics if I get into the Naval Academy. Can anyone share what the economics program is like there? What kinds of opportunities are available for economics majors?

The economics program at the Naval Academy is designed not only to provide you with a solid understanding of economic theories and principles, but also to develop your critical thinking skills through problem-solving and analysis. The program places a significant emphasis on service - you are not just studying economics; you're learning how to use those concepts for decision making within a military and public service context. It's a holistic approach that weaves together economics and leadership.

There are two tracks within the economics major: General Economics and Quantitative Economics. The General Economics option is more broad and allows for exploration in various fields of economics, including international, developmental and public economics. The Quantitative Economics track focuses on providing more rigorous training in mathematical and econometric methods.

In addition, the program offers ample opportunities for experiential learning. Midshipmen often engage in group projects, case studies, and research assignments. Many even have the opportunity to present their research at academic conferences both locally and nationally.

As an economics major at the Academy, you'll also have the opportunity to network and shape your future career within the Navy or Marine Corps. Career counselors and faculty can help guide you towards service selections that effectively utilize your knowledge of economics.

Finally, your opportunities can extend beyond the Academy itself through internships. These hands-on experiences, available in the summer, can provide you with a unique perspective of applying economics in various public and private sectors.

In summary, the economics program at the Naval Academy offers an expansive, applied curriculum, plentiful research opportunities, career guidance, and an excellent springboard for your future military service or civilian career.
