Political Science at the U.S. Naval Academy?

I'm exploring my options for studying political science and heard good things about the Naval Academy. What is their program like? How in-depth does it go, and are there any unique opportunities offered?

The United States Naval Academy (USNA) indeed has a strong political science department. This program provides both a depth of understanding into political structures and processes as well as a breadth of knowledge about global political systems.

The curriculum covers American government, comparative politics, international relations, and political theory. Field-specific electives allow you to delve into political philosophy, international law, terrorism, political economy, and many other areas. This wide array of topics allows students to pursue their specific interests within the field of political science.

Unique to the USNA's program is the emphasis on leadership and ethics. These elements are fundamental tenants of the Naval Academy's overall mission. The role of ethics in decision-making, governance, and global politics is thoroughly explored, helping students understand these complex societal dynamics.

Regarding unique opportunities, the Naval Academy boasts a competitive internship program. Midshipmen have interned with Congress, think tanks, and at the Pentagon. Some have even interned abroad at U.S. Embassies or the United Nations in New York City.

Furthermore, there's the opportunity to pursue a capstone project in your senior year, offering a deeper analysis of a particular area of interest in political science.

Lastly, students also have opportunities to attend national conferences, join the Model United Nations team, and participate in a range of study abroad programs, which can provide rich experiential learning opportunities to supplement their coursework.

Remember, a degree from the USNA is not just about gaining knowledge, but about preparing for service and leadership in the Navy or Marine Corps after graduation. Studying political science, therefore, also involves understanding the relationships and tasks that you may face as a military officer in the real world.
