What's the First Day Like at the Naval Academy?

I'm considering applying to the Naval Academy and was wondering what the first day is like for new recruits. Can anyone share their experience or any tips on what to expect and how to prepare?

The first day at the United States Naval Academy, often referred to as Induction Day (I-Day), is an amalgamation of mixed emotions, fatigue, but also excitement about the journey ahead. First off, it's the day where you officially become a Midshipman, which is a significant milestone in and of itself.

I-Day starts with a series of administrative processes, like check-ins and medical evaluations. The new Midshipmen also meet their company officers and get their uniforms. It's typically a long day filled with many briefings and long lines as new students and their families navigate the initial registration and orientation processes.

One of the most nerve-wracking yet transformative parts of the day is the haircut – yes, all plebes receive the same, very short haircut to emphasize uniformity and team over individual.

Following that, plebes (first-year Midshipmen) will typically begin Plebe Summer, a rigorous 7-week training program designed to transition the students from civilian life to military life. Activities during Plebe Summer range from physical training and drilling to learning Naval customs and traditions.

To prepare for your first day and Plebe Summer, it's recommended that you get in good physical condition by participating in regular exercise, especially running. Understanding basic Naval customs and traditions can also be beneficial, and there are plenty of resources available online for this. Also, spend some time mentally preparing for the challenges ahead – the Naval Academy is challenging, but also very rewarding. Lastly, make the most out of the time with your family and friends. With the rigorous schedule of the Naval Academy, you may not see them as often as you are used to.
