How do scholarships work at the U.S. Naval Academy?

I'm considering applying to the Naval Academy and I'm curious about the scholarships they offer. How do you qualify for one? Are there any specific criteria or notable awards available for prospective students?

The U.S. Naval Academy, like other service academies, offers a unique financial package. All students (they're called midshipmen) who attend the U.S. Naval Academy do so on a full scholarship provided by the Navy. This means your tuition, room and board, and even healthcare are covered by the Naval Academy.

In return, upon graduation, you'll have the responsibility of serving in the Navy or Marine Corps for at least five years. This commitment is a part of the 'scholarship' package that makes up your education at the Naval Academy. One thing to note here is acceptance into the academy itself is very competitive. It involves an intensive application process which includes a nomination, usually from a member of Congress. Moreover, you should also be in top physical condition and show leadership potential.

There isn't a separate scholarship application. If you are admitted to the Naval Academy, that in itself is receiving the full scholarship associated with attendance. This educational opportunity is unique because while most scholarships are often based on a student's academic performance or financial need, funding from the U.S. Naval Academy is not only about succeeding academically but also about committing to a tenure of service upon graduation.

As far as other scholarships or notable awards, midshipmen may also compete for other military-sponsored scholarships such as the Truman, Rhodes, and Marshall scholarships for extra professional and educational opportunities. These are considered highly prestigious programs that can fund graduate-level education.
