What is a letter of assurance for the Naval Academy?

I've heard about letters of assurance when applying to the Naval Academy. Can someone explain what they are and what receiving one means for my application process?

A Letter of Assurance (LOA) from the United States Naval Academy is essentially a preliminary offer of admission, contingent upon meeting certain criteria. If you receive an LOA, it means that the admissions board has reviewed your application and deemed you to be academically and physically qualified to attend the academy. The review process for an LOA is similar to a regular application review, taking into account your academic record, standardized test scores, physical fitness results, and other factors.

The catch is that holding an LOA does not constitute a formal offer of admission. To complete your application and receive a formal appointment, you still need to secure a nomination, typically from a U.S. Senator or Representative, the Vice President, or the President. This nomination process is separate and runs in parallel with the application to the Academy itself.

An LOA, therefore, is a positive indicator for your application, but it doesn't guarantee a spot at the academy. It should motivate you to proceed with securing your nomination. Once that's in place, and provided you meet the other requirements stipulated in the LOA, for instance, passing the Department of Defense's medical evaluation, you should receive a formal offer of admission to the academy.
