How does ROTC work at the Naval Academy?

I'm considering applying to the Naval Academy, and I'm curious about how ROTC functions there. Does participating in ROTC impact the daily life of cadets, and what are the benefits of joining ROTC at the Naval Academy?

The United States Naval Academy (USNA) operates a bit differently than traditional colleges when it comes to Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) programs.

This is because the Naval Academy itself is a comprehensive military service institution where students attend in preparation for their respective fields in the Navy or Marine Corps. Every student who attends the Naval Academy is essentially in a ROTC-like program throughout their entire stay.

During their four-year period, students, known as midshipmen, at the Naval Academy undergo rigorous academic, physical and military training. This includes coursework relevant to their selected career paths, physical training and readiness, and leadership and tactical education.

Upon graduation, midshipmen receive a Bachelor of Science degree and a commission as a naval officer. They then serve at least five years of service post-graduation in the Navy or Marine Corps.

The daily life of a midshipman is significantly impacted by these requirements. The day typically begins early with physical training, followed by an academic schedule of classes, military and leadership training in the afternoons, and study periods in the evenings.
