What does the Naval Academy look for in applicants?

I'm super interested in applying to the Naval Academy and was wondering what they prioritize in their applications. Is it more about academics, leadership, athletics, or a combination of all? Also, any tips on how to stand out would be great!

The U.S. Naval Academy (USNA) prioritizes a balance of academics, leadership, physical fitness, and moral character in its applicants.

Firstly, academics are of the utmost importance. The Naval Academy highly values rigorous coursework, including honors and AP classes, and strong performance on standardized tests. That being said, high grades and test scores alone won't secure admission. You'll also want to show a strong interest in and aptitude for math and science, as these are significant components of the curriculum at USNA.

Second, leadership is a key focus. The destiny of a midshipman is to become a leader in the Navy or Marine Corps, so any evidence of leadership in your extracurriculars, sports, community service, or work experience can be highly beneficial. This could include roles such as club president, team captain, committee chair, or any other positions that demonstrate you can motivate a group towards shared objectives.

As for physical fitness, performing well on the Candidate Fitness Assessment (CFA) is critical, so consider incorporating regular physical training into your routine if you haven't already. The CFA includes exercises such as a basketball throw, pull-ups/flexed arm hang, shuttle run, crunches, push-ups, and a 1-mile run, testing a broad range of physical abilities.

Finally, moral character is fundamental. The Naval Academy expects its students to act with integrity and commitment in military training, academic work, and interpersonal relationships. Admission will consider your disciplinary records, letters of recommendation, and personal character statement.

It's also important to note that securing a nomination, typically from a U.S. Senator or Representative, is an essential part of the application process. Building connections and preparing a compelling case for why you'd be an asset to the USNA can help you secure this requirement.

In terms of standing out, demonstrating a genuine understanding of and passion for life at the Naval Academy and further service as a Navy or Marine Corps officer can distinguish your application. This may also be borne out in the interview portion of the application process.

It's quite an admissions process with many steps, so staying organized and on top of deadlines will benefit you. Best of luck with your application!
