How do I transfer to the Naval Academy?

I'm currently in college, but I'm contemplating a transfer to the Naval Academy. What are the steps involved? Is transfer as competitive as regular admissions?

The U.S. Naval Academy (USNA) in Annapolis, Maryland, does not technically accept transfers. However, it does offer admissions to college students, which is somewhat similar. Regardless, you would need to start over as a first-year student, as the USNA does not accept credits from other institutions.

Step 1: Determine Eligibility

First, you'll need to ensure you meet the eligibility criteria. In addition to being a U.S. citizen, you should be at least 17 years old and not more than 23 years old by July 1 of the year you'd enter the Academy (meaning you must not turn 24 during the plebe year). You shouldn't be married, pregnant, or have a legal obligation to support a child or children.

Step 2: Apply for the Nomination

Next, you'll need to secure a nomination, typically from a U.S. Senator, U.S. Representative, or Vice President. Submission deadlines vary, but they generally fall between October and January. This step underscores the competitiveness of admissions.

Step 3: Complete the Application

The application process involves several steps. Besides the nomination, you'll have to fill out the USNA's Preliminary Application. Once this is received and you are deemed a competitive candidate, you'll be provided with additional instructions to complete the Candidate Application, which includes several essays and short answer responses to questions about your interest in USNA, leadership, moral character, etc.

Step 4: Medical and Physical Assessments

If you continue to be a competitive candidate, you'll be notified to schedule a physical exam and a candidate fitness assessment. The physical exam is to ensure you are medically qualified for military service, while the fitness assessment checks your physical aptitude.

Step 5: Interview

Finally, you'll have an interview with a Blue and Gold Officer, who usually lives in your local area.

As for competitiveness, admission to USNA is extremely competitive whether you are a high school senior, a college student, or enlisted. According to the Naval Academy, the acceptance rate is around 8%. Showing that you've excelled in college can strengthen your application, particularly if you are involved in athletics and have shown leadership, but it will by no means make the application process easy.

Remember that all of this is part of a very stringent and highly competitive process. It would be a good idea to speak with a counselor or an advisor at the Naval Academy Admissions Office to get a personalized understanding of what you can expect.
