The Naval Academy has a policy known as Fraternization which regulates relationships between different classes and ranks. The policy is mainly in place to prevent situations that could lead to favoritism or create perceptions of undue advantage.

For instance, plebes (freshmen) are not permitted to date upperclassmen within the Brigade. Relationships between midshipmen and enlisted members or officers could also lead to disciplinary action unless the relationship predates one party's entry into the Academy. Relationships between midshipmen of the same class are typically allowed, provided they keep affectionate behavior in public places to a minimum, reflecting their emphasis on professionalism.

Culturally, midshipmen are expected to be fairly discreet about relationships while on campus or in uniform, in part to maintain appearances of professionalism and respect for the military environment.
