What's the tuition at the Naval Academy?

I've heard that schooling at the Naval Academy might not be the same as other colleges in terms of cost. Can someone clarify how tuition works there?

You're correct, tuition at the U.S. Naval Academy, as well as at the other U.S. service academies, works differently than it does at civilian colleges and universities.

Students who are accepted into the Naval Academy, often referred to as "midshipmen", receive a full scholarship that covers tuition, room, and board. In addition to this, midshipmen receive a monthly stipend, which is meant to cover the cost of uniforms, books, and other supplies.

This essentially means that receiving an education at the U.S. Naval Academy is tuition-free, which is a significant financial advantage.

However, there is a service commitment after graduation. Graduates of the U.S. Naval Academy are required to serve in the Navy or Marine Corps for a minimum of five years following graduation.

So while you don't pay for tuition in the traditional sense, there is a service commitment to consider when deciding to attend a military academy like the Naval Academy.
