What is college life like at the United States Naval Academy?

I'm considering the United States Naval Academy for college and I'd love to hear more about what daily life and academic expectations are like there. How does it compare to a typical college experience?

Attending the United States Naval Academy (USNA) is certainly a unique experience compared to traditional colleges and universities. As a service academy, the Naval Academy offers a structured environment centered on academic rigor, leadership development, and physical fitness – notably different from a typical civilian college experience.

You start your experience at the Naval Academy with Plebe Summer, a 7-week training program designed to transition you from civilian to military life. During this time, you'll endure physical training, learn military customs and courtesies, and begin to develop qualities of leadership and teamwork.

During the academic year, midshipmen (as students are called) follow a regimented daily schedule. You wake up early for physical training or drill practice, followed by a communal breakfast. This is then followed by a full day of classes, which are more seminar-style with fewer than 20 students on average. The academy's academic standards are high, with students expected to maintain a balance between STEM and humanities courses for a well-rounded education.

The afternoon is reserved for sports - every midshipman must participate in a physical activity, varsity sports, club sports, or intramurals. Following this, there are study hours called "Evening Study Period" where midshipmen complete assignments and prepare for the next day's classes.

At USNA, you live in Bancroft Hall along with all other midshipmen, fostering a strong sense of camaraderie. You also take part in various drills and military training exercises during the entire year. These activities play a crucial role in leadership development and physical endurance.
