Can you leave the Naval Academy if you change your mind?

I'm considering applying to the Naval Academy, but I'm a bit worried about what happens if I decide it's not for me. Is it possible to leave the academy if things don't work out?

The decision to attend a service academy, like the Naval Academy, is indeed a significant commitment. If you choose to attend, know that there are specific rules in place should you decide to leave.

During your first two years at the Naval Academy, commonly referred to as Plebe and Third-Class year, you can leave without any repercussions or obligations. It's quite similar to transferring from a traditional college. Those who choose to leave during this period won't be required to serve in the Navy or repay their tuition.

However, the situation changes once you start your Second-Class year, which starts after you have completed two full years. There's a ceremony called "Two for Seven" that happens at the beginning of this year. Once complete, cadets are obligated to finish their remaining two years at the Academy and then serve five years of active duty service. If you decide to leave after this point, you may be required to repay the cost of your education or fulfill your commitment through enlisted service.

Given this commitment, thoroughly consider your readiness to join the Naval Academy. Research the programs, standards, and lifestyle to ensure it aligns with your career and personal goals. Be sure to talk to current Midshipmen, graduates, and your loved ones to ensure it's the right fit for you. Remember, it's a significant life decision that involves a notable commitment to public service beyond your college years.
