To become a candidate for the U.S. Naval Academy (USNA), there are several steps and requirements to be aware of. The process is quite thorough and competitive, but with the right preparation, it's certainly achievable.

1. Eligibility: In order to be eligible, you need to be a U.S. citizen, between the ages of 17 and 23, unmarried, with no dependents, and in good physical condition.

2. Academics: USNA looks for a solid academic record, focusing on strong performance in math, English, and science courses. While there isn't a strict cut-off on GPA or standardized test scores, you'll be competing against other high-achieving students.

3. Extracurriculars: Similar to other universities, USNA values extracurricular participation. In particular, leadership roles or competitive varsity sports can be beneficial, fitting in with the military's emphasis on discipline and teamwork.

4. Medical Examination: You will have to undergo a medical exam by the Department of Defense Medical Examination Review Board.

5. Physical Assessment: The Candidate Fitness Assessment (CFA) to evaluate your physical readiness, includes events such as a mile run, push-ups, and pull-ups.

6. The Nomination: Most importantly, you will need to secure a nomination typically from a U.S. Representative, U.S. Senator, or the Vice President of the United States. Start this process early, as it can be quite competitive.

7. Application: In addition to these, you will complete the online application which includes your high school transcript, letters of recommendation, standardized test scores, and essays. The USNA does not charge an application fee.

8. Interview: Selected candidates may undergo an interview as part of the admissions process.

Remember that the USNA is looking for exceptional all-round candidates who not only meet academic standards, but also demonstrate physical fitness, leadership qualities, and a strong commitment to serve their country.
